New Jersey Workers' Compensation Costs Higher than Average

The Workers' Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) has reported that the average cost per workers' compensation claim in New Jersey was 16% higher than the median of 16 states they analyzed.

The higher costs were due, in part, to more New Jersey workers taking at least one week off work because of their injuries.

The WCRI study also reported that injured New Jersey workers receive their first indemnity payments more quickly than did claimants in other states.

All New Jersey employers are required to carry workers' compensation insurance to cover medical treatment, lost wages, and permanent disability benefits to employees injured on the job, regardless of who was at fault.

Work injuries include both accidents and illnesses. A work accident can occur when an employee slips, falls, is hit or cut by an object, is involved in a vehicle collision, or strains while reaching or picking up a heavy object. Work accidents also include injuries caused by chemicals, fumes, and other toxic substances. Work-related illnesses can include respiratory conditions (such as coughs, asthma, and lung disease), rashes, poisoning, hearing loss, and even cancer. Both physical and mental stress can lead to workplace injuries.

If a workplace injury or illness was caused by a person or entity other than an employer, than the victim can bring a personal injury lawsuit against that other party, in addition to filing a workers compensation claim.

If you're injured on the job, notify your employer immediately - even if the injury doesn't seem serious. If you have an illness that might have been caused by workplace conditions, tell your former and current employers as soon as you're diagnosed - even if it's been years since you worked at that job, and even if you're retired. This will make your case stronger case if your employer disputes your workers' compensation claim.
