Marley Mellow Mood Causes Zombie Outbreak

Energy drinks have been in the news recently after the Monster Energy drink was linked to the death of a 14-year-old girl, but this is the first time we've heard of an "anti-energy" drink causing problems.

Marley's Mellow Mood, named after famed Reggae artist Bob Marley, is sold as a "relaxation drink." The Marley's Mellow Mood website says

We live in a high-stress, amped-up, always-on-the-go society, which is why energy shots have grown into a huge category. We like to think Marley's Mellow Mood as the anti-energy drink. Calm breeds peace, which is something we all can use in these crazy times.

The William R. Satz middle school in Holmdel, New Jersey sold the innocuous sounding drink in the school cafeteria. However, several students complained of becoming sick after drinking the beverage, complaining of terrible headaches, drowsiness, and vomiting. One student to a local news station, "It was like a zombiefest."

The Marley's Mellow Mood website claims the product is "100 percent natural;" contents include lemon balm, hops, chamomile, passion flower, and valerian root. The product label, however, warns "The all-natural botanical ingredients in this product have been specially blended to mellow your mood, and may cause drowsiness. ... Not intended for children..."

The drink is no longer sold at the school. The on-site manager for the cafeteria has been relieved of duties for permitting the unauthorized product.

It's not clear whether the students were injured simply for ingesting a product that is not intended for children, or whether the product that was shipped to the school was somehow defective. Despite the warning on the label, if children were harmed by the drink, it is possible that they could still be held liable.
