Displaced New Jersey Homemakers Face Difficult Financial Challenges

Displaced homemakers are mostly women (and a few men) who have lost their primary means of financial support after divorce or separation, or after a spouse's death or disability.

Many displaced homemakers have never worked outside the home, or have been out of the work force for many years. They often lack current, marketable skills needed to support themselves and their children.

According to the Legislative Liaison for the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey, Inc., there are 15 programs for displaced homemakers in New Jersey's 21 counties. These programs help displaced homemakers obtain job skills and find work. The resulting income can reduce or eliminate alimony payments from their former spouses.

The median age of women coming to the New Jersey centers for displaced homemakers is 41-60. Most have been out of the workforce for 20-30 years, and 72% have only a high school education.

More than 50% of the women coming to the centers have suffered domestic violence and abuse. According to the Liaison, the primary reason that an abused woman returns to an abuser is fear of not being able to support herself and her children.

The New Jersey Alimony Reform (NJAR) group has sought to change New Jersey's alimony laws, claiming that current laws benefit ex-wives to the detriment of ex-husbands.

However, according to the Liaison statistics show that after divorce 44% of ex-wives live below the poverty line. After divorce, most women experience a drop in their standard of living, while men's income increases by 10% after a divorce.

If you're facing a divorce, have concerns about alimony or child support, or have any other family law issue to discuss, please contact a New Jersey family law attorney at the Law Offices of Greenberg, Walden & Grossman, LLC.
