New Jersey Drivers Confess to Dangerous Behavior

"Distracted driving" - driving while doing something else, such as talking on a cell phone or sending a text message - can be as dangerous as drinking and driving. Studies have shown that texting and driving is even more dangerous than driving at over the 0.08 percent blood alcohol content that is the national legal limit.

Given how dangerous distracted driving is - and the bad press the practice has received - it's surprising the New Jersey motorists were as forthcoming as they were in a survey conducted by Plymouth Rock Assurance. The following is a list of some of the bad behaviors drivers admitted:

  • Read or sent a text message while driving: 28%
  • Programmed a GPS while driving: 27%
  • Personal grooming (makeup, hair, shaving): 12%
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 9%
  • Listening to music through headphones: 9%
  • Surfing the internet while driving: 5%
  • Reading a newspaper while driving: 2%

Everyone knows there are people who text and drive: nearly 90% of all drivers report that they have seen someone texting and driving. Half of the people surveyed report they have asked someone driving a car they were in to stop texting.

There are some behaviors that are very common that many people may not even think of as "distracted driving." 82% of drivers have tuned the car radio while driving; 72% have eaten or had something to drink while behind the wheel. Even though common, these behaviors are also distractions, and lead to an increase in accidents. One ad campaign a few years ago pictured a driver behind the wheel eating a hamburger. The caption read: "The most dangerous restaurant in the world."
