New Jersey Lowest in Fatal Injuries

According to a new report, New Jersey has the lowest rate of injury-related deaths in the US. It was followed by New York, Massachusetts, California, and Connecticut.

The Facts Hurt: A State-By-State Injury Prevention Policy Report says that New Jersey had a rate of 36.1 injury-related deaths per 100,000 people, compared to the US average of 57.9 per 100,000.

Total lifetime medical costs due to fatal injuries in New Jersey were $35 million.

The report was released by the Trust for America's Health (THAF) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It concluded that millions of injuries and deaths could be avoided if more states adopted additional injury policies, and if these programs were fully implemented and enforced.

New Jersey scored seven out of 10 from the list of key steps states can take to prevent injuries. Two states, New York and California, received the highest score of nine out of 10. Montana and Ohio scored only two out of 10.

Key safety indicators involved:

  • Seat belts
  • Mandatory ignition interlocks for drunk drivers
  • Motorcycle helmets
  • Booster seats
  • Bicycle helmets
  • Intimate partner violence protection orders
  • Teen dating violence prevention
  • Concussions
  • Accidental prescription drug overdose programs
  • "Ecodes" (allowing better tracking of injuries based on emergency department discharge records)

Injuries, whether caused by accidents or by acts of violence, are the third leading cause of death in the US overall, and are the leading cause for Americans under age 45. 12,000 children and teens die every year from injuries.

About 50 million Americans are treated every year for injuries. More than 2.8 million are hospitalized. Injuries lead to $407 billion in medical care and lost productivity costs annually.
