2013 marks record low fatalities along New Jersey's Turnpike

During 2013, motor vehicles traveling along New Jersey's Turnpike traveled roughly 5.5 billion miles. The Turnpike spans 122 miles through the Garden State and is one of the most heavily traveled highways in the state. Given the popularity of the Turnpike with drivers, it makes sense that it would be the scene of many traffic accidents, some being fatal. However, 2013 marked the lowest number of traffic-related fatalities along the Turnpike with nine individuals losing their lives.

Of those killed three were pedestrians and one a motorcyclist. Four of the remaining five fatalities involved drivers and passengers who were not wearing seat belts. While the number of fatal accidents reported on the Turnpike was at an all time low during 2013, the number of total reported car accidents remained similar to last year at 6,213, with 2012 totals of 6,286.

While the loss of nine lives is still nine too many, during 1973 a total of 79 people were killed along the Turnpike. Members of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority credit a commitment to educating drivers, improving road design and enforcing driving laws with helping reduce the number of fatal accidents.

New Jersey residents who are involved in a car accident along the Turnpike or any of New Jersey's other roads or highways may have questions and concerns that an attorney can answer. Drivers or passengers who suffer injuries in car accidents may incur hefty medical bills and be forced to take time off of work. Additionally those injured in traffic accidents are often forced to endure tremendous physical, mental and emotional pain and suffering.
