Jersey City man injures woman in motor vehicle accident

Jersey City police say 44-year-old man struck and injured a woman on May 9 while driving drunk. He has since been charged with assault by auto. According to a criminal complaint, the defendant allegedly had a blood alcohol content level of 0.26 when he rammed his Ford Explorer into the victim's Nissan Pathfinder. The legal limit of the permissible blood alcohol levels in New Jersey is 0.08, which means that the defendant exceeded that amount by three times. Police have not yet disclosed an incident report describing the event in greater detail.

The police also have not yet released the victim's name or hometown but said that she suffered injuries to her head as a result of the crash. She was later treated at Jersey City Medical Center, and a spokesman at that facility said that the hospital released her the following day after the motor vehicle accident.

The defendant was taken to Central Judicial Processing in Jersey City on the same day of the accident, where his bail was set at $15,000 with the option to pay 10 percent of that amount for release.

Motorists have a right to travel along New Jersey roads and highway free from worry that they could be harmed by someone acting irresponsibly by driving while intoxicated. However, in the event that a motorist is injured by such behavior, there are legal avenues available to them to recover their medical costs and wages they may have lost due to the injuries they suffered, as well as other damages. It is important to remember that although no outcome is certain regarding such civil litigation, a person found guilty of causing an accident while drunk driving has a greatly diminished defense against those claims.
