New Jersey truck accident kills 3, injures several others

It is important to always be alert while driving, since hazards can appear at any time. Sometimes vehicles break down and even when the drivers pull off onto the shoulder, they can still be struck by distracted drivers. Unfortunately, that was what happened in Mahwah, New Jersey, on the afternoon of June 24. A cement truck had broken down, and the driver and repair crew were outside the vehicle. The three men were struck and killed by a semi-truck.

The semi-truck also hit a barrier and a sedan, at which time both vehicles erupted in flames. The truck driver and occupants of the sedan suffered minor injuries but survived the truck accident, which happened near exit 66 on Interstate 287. Roads were closed for 10 hours and traffic was diverted.

The disabled cement truck was pulled off onto the right shoulder of the roadway when the crash occurred. It is unknown why the truck pulled off the road.

When a driver causes an accident that leads to serious injury or death, he or she can be sued by the victims in a civil lawsuit. The driver can face criminal charges as well, especially if he or she was engaged in illegal activity – such as texting, speeding or intoxication -- at the time of the accident.

Those who suffer the loss of a loved one in a truck accident caused by someone else’s negligence can file a wrongful death lawsuit and recover compensation for any losses. Damages may include funeral expenses, medical bills and lost wages. Emotional damages, such as pain and suffering and mental anguish, may also apply.
