Teacher indicted for DUI crash resulting in serious injuries

On Aug. 28, a Hackensack, New Jersey, grand jury returned an indictment charging a Lodi, New Jersey, schoolteacher with drunk driving. The county prosecutor says the charges stem from a serious collision back on April 19 that resulted in serious injuries to a police officer. The 37-year-old teacher is alleged to have committed aggravated assault, assault by auto while driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident serious injury.

According to authorities, the teacher was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he careened into the back of a stopped SUV-style patrol car. The police vehicle was sitting in the right westbound lane of Route 46 sometime around 2:00 a.m., when the accident occurred. Inside the police vehicle, a 39-year-old father of two suffered multiple serious injuries including a traumatic brain injury that kept him hospitalized for months afterwards.

The prosecutor says that the injured officer had stopped to assist another officer with a radio problem and had his lights flashing prior to the accident. In addition to the brain injury, the officer also suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs.

The prosecutor says that the teacher was picked up by other officers responding to the scene as he attempted to walk away from the crash. The official says the driver could potentially face up to 15 years in prison.

Drunk driving accidents are preventable crimes that often results in victims suffering serious injuries and enormous medical costs. New Jersey residents injured as a result of such careless actions should know that litigation through civil courts may provide them with a way to recover monetary compensation for their lost wages, medical expenses and other related costs.
