Justice for victims of drunk driving through civil litigation

The number of accidents caused by drunk drivers is truly staggering. As reported in one of our previous web posts, over 10,000 Americans died as a result of drunk drivers in 2012. Here in New Jersey, approximately 550 residents are killed annually in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents.

Even despite tougher laws like mandatory ignition interlock devices, stiff fines and enhanced jail time some careless drunk drivers will still manage to get behind the wheel. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that drivers with prior convictions for DUI were seven times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than sober drivers killed in auto accidents.

The aftermath of alcohol-related crashes are not always fatal. Many times, victims of these accidents are left living with serious injuries that may require long term and expensive treatment. Other victims suffer injuries that prevent them from working and providing income for their families.

Perhaps the worst part of drunk driving accidents is that they are completely preventable. A drunk driver actively makes a decision to place their desires above public safety whenever they choose to get behind the wheel.
