Recovering the costs for your injuries caused by drunk driving

Like any unexpected catastrophe, drunk driving accidents often leave victims struggling to regain a sense of normalcy to their lives once the dust settles. This is true regardless of whether you have personally been injured by a drunk driver or you experienced the death of a family member in an alcohol-related crash. It won't take long before the bills start rolling in.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the estimated cost for the average person surviving a drunk driving collision hovers around $99,000. NHTSA estimates that roughly half of that amount is based on actual monetary losses and the other half is related to a reduction in the victim's quality of life.

Still, not every drunk driving crash ends with the victim only being injured. In 2012, at least 10,000 people died in alcohol-related crashes. The costs associated with those deaths is astronomical. NHTSA estimates that each American drunk driving fatality ultimately cost about $3.5 million. That works out to $1.1 million in actual monetary costs, and an ultimate quality of life loss to the victims valued at $2.4 million.

The sad news is that people are still choosing to drink and drive, even after they get caught. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that drivers with previous DUI convictions are seven times more likely to have some involvement in a fatal collision than drivers who were sober when killed in car wrecks.

Fortunately, New Jersey laws permit injured victims and surviving family members to sue individuals who are responsible for harming others in DUI crashes. Based in Jersey City, our law firm represents clients primarily here in Hudson County, but also throughout other parts of New Jersey. The attorneys at our law offices have a combined total experience of over 150 years of law. Prospective clients should know that we will work hard to recover the losses they have suffered due to the negligence of drunk drivers. Our firm does not charge a fee for an initial consultation regarding these types of cases.
