Liquor store clerk involved in deadly DUI crash

A 22-year-old woman who works at Hopewell Super Buy-Rite, a liquor store in New Jersey, is now being charged in a deadly DUI accident.

Reports indicate that the young woman was behind the wheel of a 2011 Hyundai Sonata when the accident occurred. This was at about 8:48 p.m., on a Sunday evening. She was driving down Lemoine Avenue, and she was close to Whiteman Street.

Tragically, she did not see an elderly man from Fort Lee as he tried to walk across Lemoine Avenue. She hit him with the car, seriously injuring him, and emergency crews hurried to take him to a nearby hospital. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, they could not save the man, and he passed away at the hospital. He was 86 years old.

Now, the woman is being charged for her role in the accident, as the investigation indicated that she allegedly had been drinking before the crash and was under the influence when it occurred. This is according to the Fort Lee police and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit.

It is fair to note that she did not leave the scene after the crash, and she did cooperate with the officers who responded. Even so, she is now facing first-degree vehicular homicide charges, DUI charges, reckless driving charges and more charges for driving a motor vehicle with an open container. She is being held in the Bergen County Jail Annex and bail is set at $150,000.

Seeing a drunk driver face charges may be a comfort to a victim's family, but it does not always properly compensate them for their loss. Those who have been hurt or lost loved ones need to know what further legal steps may be needed.
